The Sustainability of “Postmodern” University Research

Ramsden, Jeremy J.

University of Buckingham (UK)

Abstract

The author investigates how market pressures, contract research and prespecified council funding have reshaped the modern university, undermining its traditional mission of curiosity, critical inquiry and openness. Drawing on historical examples, policy reports and case studies (notably Bell Labs and research on aircraft cabin air), the study traces the rise of Mode 2 – or applied, problem‑driven – research, and documents how earmarked grants and deliverable‑driven funding can create perverse incentives that erode academic autonomy and distort research priorities. It further analyses how governance reforms and financial pressures have empowered administrators and lawyers, replacing collegial oversight with accounting and quasi‑judicial mindsets, commodifying research outputs and weakening scientific integrity. The paper argues that only resolute, grassroots academic renewal can restore independent, reliable inquiry.
