The author explores the "theory of pro and con" — the idea that hardship fuels success — and looks at how it applies to women in the US. Using historical and biographical examples — from 19th‑century gender norms through figures such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Bess Truman, and Hillary Clinton to the ancient pharaoh Hatshepsut — the piece argues that many women’s achievements are driven more by adversity and dissatisfaction than by societal advantage. Success is presented as personal fulfilment rather than wealth; resilience, disagreement, and emotional challenge are shown as the forces that help women overcome social limits and make an impact.
